R K Bell expand with Volvo excavators

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

R K Bell Limited, a contracting and plant hire concern of repute within Somerset and Avon has embarked on an expansion plan for its business with Volvo Construction Equipment products.
Established in 1942 as agricultural contractors, RK Bell soon progressed into the general plant hire arena in the Avon and Somerset area. In 1978 the Company established its current headquarters (recently refurbished in 2001) at Dunwear close to Bridgwater and is now under the stewardship of the founder’s grandson, Nick Bell.
As the plant hire business has developed, RK Bell has favoured products on offer from Volvo and has just taken delivery of its sixth, fourteen tonne EC140BLC excavator and joins an additional three, twenty one tonne EC210BLC’s, all of which are available for operated and self drive hire. This purchase is part of RK Bell’s planned development and expansion of the business. As Nick Bell explains; “In reacting to customer demand and with an eye to the future, we have opened a depot in Newton Abbot, Devon. Our research found that most of our customers associated the RK Bell brand primarily with Bath, Bristol and Somerset areas. We made the commercial decision to re-brand our service offering within what was, for us, a relatively low volume territory to a new name – Positive Plant Hire. This new venture became operational in January 2006 and has proved to be an unmitigated success for both ourselves and our preferred suppliers.”
Weighing in at 14.1 tonnes the EC140BLC comes installed with a Volvo 4 cylinder low emission engine developing 93 nett hp and a maximum torque of 390Nm achieved at 1500 r/min. The engine’s horsepower is precisely matched to the hydraulic system’s components and design, in order to maximise performance levels, provide high fuel efficiencies and meet EU Step 2 and EPA Tier 2 emission standards. Two main hydraulic pumps delivering 240 litres / minute flow and together the engine and hydraulic system of the machine are managed by Volvo’s unique ACS (Automatic Control System) designed for providing high productivity, high digging capacity and excellent fuel economy. The hydraulic system designed to function with low operator effort and improved precision. To achieve maximum efficiency on a full range of job applications, the system is designed with four power modes that respond automatically to the operator’s joystick movements. The boom, arm and slew priority system, boom and arm flow regeneration, and two variable displacement piston pumps enhance the system’s performance, giving high slew torque, powerful digging forces, and fast digging and slew speeds. These features mean all B-series machines have faster cycle times and more efficient operation.
The EC140BLC comes with a high specification as standard. For instance, boom and dipper cylinders have hose rupture valves fitted as standard meaning that the owner and operator can utilise the full lifting capacity of the machines in total confidence. Other standard features include quick hitch hydraulics and hammer/shear hydraulic lines fitted to the end of the dipper.
