Ennstone Thistle Ltd take delivery of the first Volvo L350F sold in the U.K.

Friday, September 21st, 2007

Ennstone Thistle Ltd, has taken delivery of the first Volvo L350F wheeled loader to be sold in the U.K. as the front line machine for its quarrying activities at Ethiebeaton quarry on the outskirts of Dundee.

The deal for the flagship wheeled loader was struck at this year’s Hillhead exhibition where the L350F made its U.K. debut and has subsequently gone to work handling blasted whinstone from face to the primary crusher at Ethiebeaton quarry. The 52 tonne wheeled loader replaces a four year old L330E and has been especially prepared for the abrasive nature of the material being extracted. This includes tyre chains and a 6.2m³ spade nosed rock bucket and a central lubrication system. To enhance the safe operation of the machine, the L350F has been enabled with all round visibility through the use of a rear view camera and convex mirrors. An Ogden VMS automatic braking system has also been fitted in addition to the standard reverse alarm.
The all new L350F will offer much higher productivity leading to a massive improvement in fuel efficiency compared with the outgoing L330E model. The source of these improvements largely lies in the combination of the L350F’s new Tier 3/Stage III Volvo engine with an output of 535hp and maximum torque reached at just 1400RPM, stronger hydraulics, a new Volvo transmission with lock-up and new axles. As a result, the new model will be easier and more comfortable to operate, leading to faster cycle times and sustained high performance throughout the work day, thanks to reduced operator fatigue. These facts are endorsed by Ennstone’s machine operator who has immediately found a marked improvement in performance over his old machine citing the lock up feature as a definite improvement and the need to only run at around 1400rpm to get the optimum performance form the L350F. Operator comfort has also taken a significant step forward with the introduction of the L350F. Fitted with a larger Volvo Care Cab, the operator will enjoy a more spacious air conditioned interior that is insulated from noise, dust and vibrations – the latter thanks to viscous cab mounts and air suspended seat.
The newly delivered Volvo L350F will be positively put to the test at Ennstone Thistle’s Ethiebeaton quarry. The machine is capable of producing in excess of 350 tonnes per hour, over a five and a half day week.
Since 1997, Ennstone Thistle Ltd has grown through continual expansion and acquisition to be one of the largest and efficient producers of aggregates, sand and gravel, asphalt and ready mixed concrete in northern Scotland.
