High Performance Miner of the Year

Friday, September 21st, 2007

Becker Mining Systems was voted “High Performance Miner of the Year”. The mining supplier was given the award at the Aachen International Mining Symposium (AIMS) held at the end of May. With the award, the organisers of the AIMS, the Institute of Mining Engineering I at the RWTH Aachen, rewarded the group’s international growth and innovative mining solutions.
In his speech, Prof. Per Martens, the head of the institute, highlighted the consistent growth of Becker Mining Systems since its foundation in 1964: “Becker developed from a local supplier to the mines in the Saarland region to a global player with subsidiaries in South Africa, Poland, China, France, Russia, Australia and Canada.” With about 1,100 employees worldwide, the company generated a turnover of roughly EUR 156 million in 2006.
Becker Mining Systems specialises in infrastructure solutions for energy distribution, automation, communication, and the transport of men and material in underground mining. “To enhance productivity underground Becker offers successful mining solutions that are in the focus of the High Performance Mine Production Conference,” Prof. Martens further explained.
Dr. Wolfgang Wegener, Member of the Board of Becker Mining Systems AG, and Arnold Trockur, Vice President Sales and Marketing, accepted the award. “We are very proud to have been voted High Performance Miner of the Year. For us, this award means an obligation and motivation to continue developing innovative solutions to increase productivity and safety in underground mines.”
The symposium is held annually since 1995 and deals with different topics every year to serve as a platform for the exchange of experiences between mining experts in times of a progressing internationalisation and globalisation of the mining industry. Depending on the focus of each annual conference, outstanding performance may also be honoured by awards as “Roofbolter of the Year” or “Rapid Miner of the Year”. Predecessor of Becker Mining Systems was Prof. Michael Karmis of the Virginia Tech University, USA, who was named “High Performance Miner of the Year” in 2003.
