Volvo A40E’s spearhead a list of new equipment for Thorne Environmental

Monday, November 26th, 2007

Thorne Environmental Ltd of Doncaster South Yorkshire has made a significant investment in Volvo Construction Equipment products and is one of the first U.K. contractors to take delivery of the all new Volvo A40E articulated hauler.
The specialist earthmoving and remediation company has made a further significant investment in Volvo Construction Equipment products for its growing plant fleet with twenty six machines being ordered in total. Spearheading this latest order are three Volvo A40E articulated dumptrucks which are the first to arrive in Great Britain. The rest of the assortment is made up of a further ten A25E and A30E dumptrucks, three L150F loading shovels and ten C series excavators including two forty six tonne EC460C’s. “These latest additions are incremental to our earthmoving fleet to satisfy the increased volume of the projects we are undertaking,” commented Director Kevin Lunness. “Good reliability, performance and the prospect of high residual prices are factors that have prompted us to choose products from Volvo yet again, not least their reputation for first class after market support,” he continued.
The recently launched Volvo A40E is equipped with a Volvo 16-litre turbo-charged high-performance low emission diesel engine developing 471 net hp and develops high torque at low engine speed. This is an important feature when starting from a standstill, making the hauler easy to manoeuvre in difficult terrain. The machine has all-wheel drive and 100% differential-locks, giving the operator many driving options. The hauler can go practically anywhere, economically and efficiently. The entire drivetrain – engine, transmission, dropbox and axles – is made up of Volvo components. Besides the larger 16 litre engine, the A40E benefits from a new nine speed forward and three speed reverse transmission and a re-designed drop box eliminating the need for high and low ratio speeds found on the A40D model. In addition, new axles and planetary type hub reductions with retardation being achieved through the service brakes instead of the transmission are new features over the former D model.
The dump body has an increased load capacity of 39000kg with an 18.8m³ heaped SAE 2:1 volume with the full tailgate fitted and is constructed with 400HB steel throughout providing both high yield and tensile strength. A unique feature is the patented Volvo Load and Dump Brake. When the hauler is in position for loading or dumping, the operator presses a button to automatically apply the brakes and place the transmission in neutral. This improves safety and minimizes wear on the brakes and drivetrain. Once loading or dumping has been completed, the operator selects a gear and the Load and Dump Brake is disengaged.
