Massey Energy Company announce that the company has promoted M. Shane Harvey to the position of general counsel.
Harvey, 38, has served as vice president and assistant general counsel at Massey Energy since November 2006, with primary responsibility for legal matters involving environmental compliance, health and safety compliance and federal and state regulatory issues. As general counsel, Harvey will continue to oversee these areas of responsibility while assuming additional authority over all legal matters of concern to the company, including coordination with outside counsel.
“Shane has been a valuable asset for Massey Energy from the day he joined our company. He has a keen legal mind, a good way with people and an impressive work ethic,” said Don L. Blankenship, Chairman and CEO. “On both a personal and professional level, Shane is a great choice for this important position.”
Harvey has worked closely with Massey’s group operations during his tenure and is familiar with all aspects of the company. He received his law degree from West Virginia University School of Law, where he was an editor of the National Coal Issue of the law review. Before entering law school, he worked as an analyst for Goldman Sachs International in London. He earned a B.S. in Finance at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) and graduated first among his fellow finance majors.
