National Coal Mining Museum

The National Coal Mining Museum for England is delighted to announce a special family day to enable visitors to ‘See How They Run’ on Sunday 9 March. The day will give visitors the chance to see coal mining power throughout the ages, with demonstrations of early horse power, right through to some of the large coal cutters usually kept in storage.
The machinery will be running to celebrate National Science and Engineering Week and the special day is a great opportunity for families to see engineering in action with the machines that dig drill and move coal underground.
A special machines trail with accompanying activities will also be running free of charge during the day to help bring the whole experience to life. Once you’ve seen the machines in action you can take the Museum’s famous underground tour and travel 140 metres underground with an ex-miner to see how the machines are used in a working coal mine.
