Tuesday, April 28th, 2009
DTEK, the fuel and energy industry leader in the Ukraine, is pleased to announce that its coal mining and power generating enterprises have successfully completed the certification process for its safety management system that meets international standard OHSAS 18001:2007. Moody International awarded the certificates to Pavlogradugol, Komsomolets Donbassa Mine and Vostokenergo.
The three businesses implemented international standard OHSAS 18001:2007 between May 2007 and December 2008. The certification audit, which was carried out by Moody International in February 2009, confirmed the successful integration of the OHSAS system in DTEK’s coal mining and power generating enterprises. To realize this project, DTEK invested UAH 119m in 2008.
At present, the OHSAS 18001:2007 standards are being introduced at DTEK’s energy supply companies Service-Invest and PES-Energougol. By the end of 2010, all DTEK enterprises intend to achieve certification.
The benefits of introducing enhanced safety management systems are already evident, with the Company’s enterprises recording a significant reduction in industrial accidents. In 2008, the overall accident rate fell by 36% year-on-year, and the number of accidents per 100 employees fell by 35%. What’s more, the number of serious industrial accidents fell by 65%. The result is that DTEK enjoys one of the highest safety standards among Ukrainian energy-generating and coal mining companies.
DTEK Chief Executive Officer Maxim Timchenko commented: “The achievement of OHSAS standard certification demonstrates that DTEK is introducing best practice and innovative approaches into its health and safety system. It enhances our production process and involves employees in building an effective H&S system. In turn, this helps achieve two key objectives: to improve the investment appeal and sustainability of the company and also to meet our responsibilities to employees more effectively, as our people are the fundamental value for DTEK.”
DTEK’s Director for Certification of Moody International, Makhmud Albekov, added: “The breadth of the health and safety project being implemented by DTEK is unmatched in the CIS. This is important for DTEK and the whole Ukrainian fuel and energy sector, where working conditions have been regarded as hazardous.”
