The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award International Association and Xstrata Form Global Partnership

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

A global partnership between The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award International Association (IAA) and Xstrata plc, the global diversified mining group, is helping the IAA reach out to marginalised young people around the world, providing them with new opportunities.
Xstrata and the IAA have developed a dynamic international partnership that is investing in young people worldwide, helping them to build new skills and access new experiences. In the first year of the partnership, the focus is on extending the Award to new countries and communities in the Americas and Southern and Eastern Africa, and assuring the quality of the Programme wherever it is delivered.
Mick Davis, Xstrata plc Chief Executive, comments: “Xstrata’s corporate social involvement programme recognises our responsibility to contribute to community development wherever we operate throughout the world. Enabling young people to flourish, particularly in challenging circumstances or more remote regions, is a fundamentally important element of building sustainable communities and nations. We are delighted that through our partnership, the International Award will reach even greater numbers of young people, enabling them to develop new skills and access new opportunities and experiences.”
In Africa, Xstrata is supporting the expansion of programmes to reach young offenders in countries including Swaziland, South Africa and Kenya to over 3,000 participants at almost 70 correctional institutions. The Award Programme is also being introduced in Tanzania and strengthened in a number of other countries in the region.
In the Americas, with the support of Xstrata, the IAA is holding workshops for correctional officers to develop its young offender work. In addition, it is providing support for the growth of the Award in countries such as Ecuador, Puerto Rico, St Kitts, Paraguay and Panama.
Commenting on the announcement, Gillian Shirazi LVO, Secretary General of the IAA said: “As a key partner of the International Award, Xstrata will help us to meet our global objective of increasing participation to one million young people by the end of 2010 – a target that we are on track to achieve.”
