Blue chip contractors, Highlands Quality Construction Ltd (HQC) continues to augment its plant fleet with Volvo Construction Equipment to fulfil more prestigious contracts in Scotland and the north of England.
Established in 1993 to fill a gap in the market for small-scale undertakings such as private works, HQC has continued to grow from strength to strength specializing in contracts such as major road construction and maintenance, renewable energy projects, bulk earthworks, landfill construction and restoration, marine and coastal defence projects. Supporting these activities, the company also has interests in quarrying, crushing and screening, recycling and demolition with a turnover in 2008 of close to £28m and a projected £38m in 2010. During this time HQC has built an impressive portfolio of plant and equipment as well as road haulage vehicles with Volvo Construction Equipment products very much at its heart.
To cater for a recently awarded major motorway upgrade contract in Scotland’s central belt, an additional four excavators, two loading shovels and a soil compaction roller have been ordered for the HQC fleet. All seven machines join other existing Volvo’s in tackling a challenging six kilometre stretch of the M80 close to Cumbernauld. Part of the contract involves the supply of Type 1 material. To accomplish this, two EC460CL excavators and two L150F loading shovels have been ordered and put to work in nearby Croy and Duntillen quarries under a special arrangement extracting, then loading the crushed material onto HQC’s fleet of tippers. The material is then transported directly to the road sections being worked on or to HQC’s yard close to the project for storage. A Volvo EC140C and EW140C together with a Volvo SD122DX soil compactors have also been ordered to assist in the road up-grade.
Opting for this recent selection of equipment demonstrates the continuing strong relationship between the two companies built mainly on the strong after sales support provided by Volvo Construction Equipment according to HQC’s operations director Colin Thomson.
