New siding and junction at CEMEX’s largest quarry to increase rail capacity by 25%

A new rail siding and junction at the entrance to CEMEX UK’s largest quarry, Dove Holes in Derbyshire, will increase the rail loadout capacity by 25% from 2 million tonnes to 2.5 million tonnes per annum.
The 100 metre siding removes a bottleneck at this important UK siding and allows two trains to enter or exit at the same time, reducing congestion. The configuration has also been designed to allow loading of two trains at the same time.
Dove Holes is CEMEX UK’s largest rail operation and this development will strengthen its rail capacity to support the needs of the market. 60% of materials in and out of Dove Holes are transported by rail and the new siding will ensure more truck loads are taken off the roads and onto rail. In 2009, 12% of total CEMEX aggregate movements were made by this mode of transport.
CEMEX UK has a six year contract with DBSchenker, the primary rail freight provider out of Dove Holes and this development is a joint venture. The first loco using the siding was a Class 66 pulling 24 HOA hopper wagons loaded with a total of 1824 tonnes of aggregate. This load is being transported to Selby in Yorkshire for use by CEMEX Asphalt plants.
