YSE- and ASX-listed Alcoa said that its San Ciprián complex in Galicia, Spain, was affected by the massive power outage that swept across the Iberian Peninsula on Monday.

Both the alumina refinery and aluminum smelter at the site experienced disruptions, the company said in a statement.

Alcao added that it was conducting a thorough assessment of the facility to determine the full extent of the operational and financial impact.

The blackout, which began at 12:33 local time on Monday, is considered one of Europe’s most significant in recent history, affecting millions across Spain and Portugal. Essential services, including transportation, telecommunications, and emergency systems, were disrupted.

By Tuesday morning, power had been restored to 99% of Spain’s energy demand, with full restoration achieved before midday. Portugal experienced a similar recovery timeline.

The outage had significant economic implications, with Spain’s employers’ organisation estimating losses of up to €1.6-billion.
