Rio Tinto has awarded a $167 million contract to NRW Civil & Mining, a wholly owned subsidiary of NRW Holdings, for its Brockman Syncline 1 mine development in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
The contract will involve a broad scope of work at the Brockman mine hub, including the construction of earthworks, roadworks and drainage for the site’s primary crusher, overland conveyor, and non-process infrastructure.
NRW will also deliver haul roads, access roads, and concrete structures, carry out drill and blast operations and oversee the construction of a mechanically stabilised earth run-of-mine (ROM) wall, and install two precast concrete overpass tunnels and in-situ concrete foundations for the primary crusher.
The contract is set to commence immediately and will require a peak workforce of more than 300 personnel.
The Brockman Syncline 1 mine development is located near other projects NRW is working on for Rio Tinto, including the Brockman 4 to Brockman 2 haul road and the recently completed Western Turner Northern access road.
“NRW is pleased to be awarded this project with one of the world’s leading mining companies,” NRW said.
“This is another significant project that NRW will undertake for Rio Tinto and continues to build on the longstanding relationship between the two companies.”
Rio Tinto recently awarded a $157 million contract to Primero Group, another wholly owned subsidiary of NRW Holdings, for its Hope Downs 1 sustaining project in the Pilbara region.
Both the Brockman Syncline 1 mine development and the Hope Downs 1 sustaining project are designed to strengthen Rio Tinto’s world-class Pilbara iron ore operations, which currently comprise 17 iron ore mines, four independent port terminals, a rail network spanning nearly 2000km and related infrastructure.
