Liebherr-Australia is set to deliver a range of excavators across Glencore’s Queensland and New South Wales operations under a new major machine delivery plan.
The agreement will see the delivery of 17 Liebherr machines across six Glencore mining operations in Queensland and NSW, with the deliveries scheduled through to the end of 2026.
The first phase of the agreements will see 10 R 9600 excavators, five R 9400 excavators, one R 9800 excavator and one R 9100 excavator be delivered, with seven of these machines powered by Liebherr’s D9812 engines.
Of the 17 machines, seven have been successfully commissioned across Glencore’s mining operations so far.
“We are excited to announce this new era of partnership with Glencore,” Liebherr-Australia executive general manager of sales, marketing, training and solutions Brian Boitano said.
“Securing multi-year supply agreements of this scale is a proud moment for Liebherr-Australia. It reflects the capability of our national team to support large, complex fleets and deliver consistent performance across multiple sites.”
NSW
Liebherr-Australia delivered a R 9600 and a R 9400 to the Ravensworth coal complex in NSW in 2024, marking the first time Liebherr excavators had ever been delivered to that site.
Following this milestone, Liebherr-Australia has delivered a R 9600 and a R 9400 to the United Wambo coal mine joint venture.
Three R 9600s and a R 9400 are also scheduled to be commissioned for the Bulga coal mine, all of which will be equipped with Liebherr’s D9812 engines.
The delivery of a R 9800 for Ravensworth and a R 9100 for the Mount Owen coal mine are scheduled for 2025, as well as two additional R 9400s for Ravensworth in 2026.
“Delivering multiple machines to Glencore over the past eight months, some of which were the first to be introduced to Ravensworth, was a testament to our high-performing product portfolio and also marked an important milestone in our partnership,” Boitano said.
Glencore’s Hunter Valley operations in NSW – Ravensworth, United Wambo, Bulga and Mount Owen – are expected to receive 12 of the 17 machine deliveries scheduled by the end of 2026.
Queensland
Back in February, Liebherr-Australia commissioned a brand-new R 9600 for Glencore’s Hail Creek coal mine. This marked the first piece of Liebherr equipment at this operation.
A second R 9600 followed in July, with another scheduled for 2026.
The delivery of two R 9600 excavators to the Hail Creek coal mine in Queensland marks the first time Liebherr’s equipment has ever been at that operation. All three R 9600s are powered by Liebherr’s D9812 engines.
Glencore’s Rolleston coal mine will also receive two R 9600s in 2026.
“Our partnership with Glencore is built on trust, technology and long-term value,” Boitano said.
“This agreement lays a solid foundation for our future with Glencore and we’re excited about more machines coming in 2026 and 2027, with the potential for further expansion.
“For now, production and reliability are what matter most and we’re proud to play a role in delivering both. Together, we’re building a long-term partnership.”
To support the long-term success of the Liebherr machines across the select Glencore operations, Liebherr-Australia will provide dedicated site support that includes embedded technicians and comprehensive operator and technical training.
Alongside the 17 Liebherr machines scheduled for delivery by the end of 2026, further units are expected to be delivered to Glencore’s Queensland and NSW operations throughout 2027 as part of the ongoing agreement between both companies.
