Algoma Steel Group has been forced to halt production at its electric arc furnace after an unexpected outage at the Lake Superior Power generating facility, though finishing and shipping operations remain active while engineers assess the damaged equipment and map out repair requirements.
To minimise future disruption, the company is accelerating maintenance work that had already been scheduled for the power plant. On current inventory levels and order commitments, Algoma does not anticipate missing customer delivery dates, but it cautions that shipment volumes could be affected depending on how long the outage lasts. The furnace is expected to remain offline for no more than 21 days.
Algoma is in discussions with the Independent Electricity System Operator to explore temporary onsite power arrangements that could allow the EAF to restart while repairs continue. If successful, the downtime could be shortened to around ten days.
In parallel, the company is working with GE Vernova under its long‑term service agreement to mobilise and commission a spare turbine at the site—an intervention Algoma believes will help restore normal operating conditions at Lake Superior Power.
