When a mine roof support system needed a complete overhaul, Motion’s integrated network delivered a compliant, site-ready solution – proving the power of a single supplier with everything under one roof.

When it comes to complex underground mining equipment, time, compliance, and coordination are everything. That’s why Motion’s end-to-end overhaul model is reshaping how rebuilds get done – faster, smarter, and with less margin stacking.

Motion’s Rutherford team was tasked with overhauling three mine roof support machines purchased from the US.

“The equipment had been part-refurbished overseas,” explained Will Rogers, regional manager Motion Engineering & Services – NSW.

“But when we stripped it back here in Australia, we identified significant defects and compliance gaps. The machines had to be brought up to Australian code – structurally, electrically, and hydraulically,” Rogers said.

What followed was a company-wide effort.

Drawing on all three of Motion’s core business lines – Engineering & Services, Fluid Power Solutions, and Industrial Solutions – the project saw up to 30 staff contribute across design, machining, components, and testing.

“We didn’t just fix problems,” Rogers said. “We rebuilt these machines from the ground up and did it without juggling external contractors.”

The Fluid Power Solutions team, led locally by Timothy Jeffrey, played a key role in meeting MDG 41 compliance standards.

“We were responsible for producing the full hydraulic hose kits,” Jeffrey explained. “That meant assembling, sleeving, testing, tagging – the whole lot. Each hose had to meet strict safety and traceability requirements before installation.”

Meanwhile, Motion’s Industrial Solutions coordinated the rapid supply of key parts including couplings, bearings, and bushes.

“We had to work fast,” Rogers said. “There were lead time challenges from the OEMs, but our national distribution network made it possible to source what we needed in days – not weeks.
