Anglo American Platinum FD Craig Miller is the new CEO of Anglo American Platinum, with effect from October 1.
This follows incumbent CEO Natascha Viljoen’s decision in February 2023 to take up the COO role at Newmont Corporation.
Miller, Anglo Platinum’s FD since 2019, has more than 23 years of mining industry experience in South Africa, Brazil, and the UK, across Anglo American’s platinum group metals, base metals, and bulk commodities businesses. He is a former CFO of Anglo’s iron-ore business in Brazil, the coal business in South Africa, and head of the Group CEO’s office.
He began his career as a trainee accountant at Deloitte in Johannesburg and joined Anglo in London as a finance manager in May 2000.
Anglo Platinum chairperson Norman Mbazima described Miller as an invaluable member of the leadership team and board in strategy development and execution, and driving cost and value optimisation across the business.
“Against the backdrop of macro-economic uncertainties, including high inflation and lower metal prices, we must remain agile, adapting to market realities while focusing on efficiency and prudent resource management. We have the foundations in place for safe and sustainable operations and continued value delivery, and will continue investing in our growth projects in a disciplined manner,” Miller stated in a media release.
The recruitment process for Miller’s successor is underway.
Also on July 27, Anglo American plc announced the appointment of John Heasley as FD following the May 2023 announcement of Stephen Pearce’s decision to retire.
Heasley is expected to join Anglo American and its executive leadership team by no later than the end of 2023, prior to joining the board as an executive director and taking over as FD, enabling a smooth transition through the year-end financial reporting process.
Heasley has served as the CFO of The Weir Group plc, the FTSE100 global engineering company, since 2016, playing a role in Weir’s transformation to focus on mining and the strategic delivery of technologies that improve productivity and sustainability in the mining industry, as well as driving performance improvement programmes.
