WestStar Industrial has won a critical contract, and will conduct a range of works on the Alcoa Pinjarra Alumina Refinery’s residue filtration stage two project.

The contract, worth approximately $115 million, was signed by the industrial services company through its wholly-owned subsidiary SIMPEC on September 29.

The scope of work is extensive, and includes all structural, mechanical, and piping, electrical and instrumentation, civil supply, construction, and commissioning works for the project.

The state two project is part of a broader expansion of Alcoa’s bauxite operations in the south-west of Western Australia.

The infrastructure and services will help to increase processing capacity at the refinery. In particular, it will increase the amount of bauxite residue, a by-product of refining bauxite, that can be converted into alumina-into filter cake.

The conversion process removes a significant amount of the water content mechanically via filter presses, thus reducing the storage area compared with alternative residue drying solutions.

The project works are scheduled to  commence immediately, with an expected date of completion in the first quarter of 2027.

SIMPEC managing director Mark Dimasi said the contract represented an important milestone in the company’s growth journey.

“It further strengthens our reputation as a trusted partner for the safe and successful delivery of complex industrial projects, while showcasing our ability to execute multidisciplinary works to the highest standard,” he said.

“We look forward to delivering this project safely, efficiently, and with the quality outcomes expected.”
