What began in Brisbane almost 20 years ago as a pioneering approach to high horsepower engine remanufacturing, has evolved into a widely adopted model across the globe, with a simple question of how engines can be rebuilt and returned now being the gold standard.

As Cummins marks its 100-year anniversary supporting the global mining industry, the company’s Australian-based master rebuild centres (MRCs) remain a focal point in providing service with the performance and reliability that often exceeds original factory expectations.

Today, Cummins operates a global network of 13 mining MRCs across multiple countries and regions worldwide, including key locations in Brisbane and Perth supporting mining operations in Australia, with remanufactured engines spanning the company’s QSK19 and QSK78 engine ranges.

The Australian facilities were the first Cummins MRCs established globally, and  continue to deliver exceptional engine life performance, technical ability and process innovation.

The Brisbane MRC commenced operations in 2008, with Cummins MRC manager Alan Routledge helping develop the original facility template that has since been adopted throughout the world.

Perth followed one year later in 2009 and, in May, celebrated the build of its 3000th engine, matching the milestone already surpassed by Brisbane.

Engineering excellence

Unlike a conventional overhaul, every engine entering a Cummins MRC undergoes a meticulous 600-step remanufacturing procedure designed to return the engine to ‘zero-hour’ status. Each engine is completely stripped, inspected and machined, after which they are then rebuilt and dyno tested under the same manufacturing execution systems and testing procedures used in Cummins’ factory-new engine production facilities.

With an exchange program also offered by Cummins’ MRC network, mine operators receive engines that have been rebuilt to high standards using a defined bill of materials and strict reuse guidelines.

Any component that falls outside of these guidelines is replaced, while all cylinder blocks are machined through approved partner machine shops.

To further strengthen the company’s offering, every engine rebuilt in the Australian MRC network incorporates the latest product updates and engineering advancements, alongside locally developed enhancements that are tailored to the Australian mining industry. This ensures an optimised maintenance practice, increased operation uptime and extended engine life outcomes.

For customers operating in some of the harshest mining environments in the world, this level of quality control is critical.

“Our goal is for every remanufactured engine to meet or exceed factory new engine life,” Cummins Asia Pacific mining director Ben Clark said.

“These facilities are strategically located close to major mining hubs and customers, allowing us to work closely with global mining companies, local mines and contractors to meet their operational requirements and minimise downtime.”

Supporting customer uptime remains central to the MRC operation.

The rebuild centres work closely with Cummins mining business managers and branch networks, operating within a planning window of a few months to align supply schedules with customer maintenance programs to ensure on-time delivery and minimise operational disruption.

This customer-centred approach has helped drive strong adoption of the support bank engine program across the Australian mining sector, with engines rebuilt in Brisbane and Perth delivering some of the longest operating life figures globally within the mining sector.

Further expansion

Following a major refurbishment of the Brisbane MRC several years ago, Cummins is now progressing significant upgrades to the facility in Perth, with recent improvements including the installation of two new engine dynos, a fully enclosed paint booth and a newly commissioned wastewater treatment plant.

Additional upgrades, including improved Atlas Copco torque arm systems and facility layout enhancements, are scheduled to continue through to late 2026 and 2027, with all works carefully managed to ensure no disruption to customer supply.

The 3000-engine milestone in Perth highlights both the maturity of the operation and the trust the customers place in the rebuild program.
