Global gold miner Newmont Corporation has advised of its underground operations at the Cadia mine being suspended temporarily following seismic activity experienced in the area late on April 14.

The company says Australia recorded an earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Local Magnitude scale in Central West, New South Wales, which is considered a light to moderate earthquake. This was followed by two aftershock events.

Newmont affirms that safety procedures functioned effectively and that all underground personnel are accounted for and returned above ground. There are also no reported injuries.

The company has paused underground operations while specialist teams inspect and assess the situation.

Cadia is one of Australia’s largest gold and copper mining operations.
