Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) has reported that the country’s mining production increased by 9.7% year-on-year in February, with platinum group metals (PGMs), chromium ore, manganese ore and gold having made the largest positive contributions.

Iron-ore and coal made the largest negative contributors.

Further, Stats SA’s data shows that seasonally adjusted mining production increased by 2.3% year-on-year in February. This followed month-on-month changes of 3.7% and -2.1% in January and December, respectively.

Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 1.7% in the three months ended February, compared with the previous three months. The largest negative contributors were iron-ore and PGMs, while manganese ore made the biggest positive contribution.

MINERAL SALES
Mineral sales at current prices increased by 58.3% year-on-year in February, with gold, PGMs and chromium ore having made the biggest positive contributions.

‘Other’ non-metallic minerals and manganese ore were the largest negative contributors.

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices increased by 9.4% in February, compared with January. This followed month-on-month changes of -8% in January and 21.8% in December.

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices increased by 17.5% in the three months ended February, compared with the previous three months.
